![]() What they were troubled about was the volatility of palay prices in the market – a longstanding concern among rice farmers even prior to the pandemic. When asked about the greatest problem they currently face, the farmers mentioned neither the effects of the pandemic nor the typhoon. But it is also a symptom of a more complex and insidious problem that has been plaguing the agriculture sector for decades. It is their way of framing their situation in a more favorable manner. We may consider their attitude a component of resiliency. For them, crises are a fact of life they are inevitable risks associated with farming. It’s not like anyone wants it to happen, anyway). Wala naman pating may gusto noon eh” (We can’t do anything about it. As one of the farmers put it, “Wala nang magagawa. They tended to view crises as “beyond their control,” and had gradually learned to develop an acceptance of their conditions. What struck me most was how these situations had became normal among the farmers. The farmers lamented that these impacts would affect them for months. The persistent rainfall and strong winds submerged their fields in floodwater and destroyed much of their crops. They complained more, however, about the damage caused by the consecutive typhoons. They shared that the pandemic had brought out certain issues such as mobility, but since farmers are recognized as essential workers, their agricultural work was generally unhampered. My stay in the community lasted for three days, and in that span of time, I was able to interview different farmers and hear their narratives. In November 2020, I decided to visit a small rice farming barangay in Laguna to conduct a study. Essentially, I wanted to dig deeper and find the underlying reason why our Filipino farmers suffer. With these things in mind, I wanted to know how these crises affected the agriculture sector specifically, and how our common farmers coped and dealt with the impacts of these crises. The high level of poverty among our farmers also makes them highly at risk for the effects of these crises. Yet despite their crucial role, Filipino agricultural workers remain among the poorest and most disadvantaged groups in our society. Considered the backbone of our society, the agriculture sector responds to our public health needs by ensuring food security for every Filipino. Indeed, to live in the Philippines means to live in constant danger and uncertainty.īut there is one sector that bears the brunt of these crises the most. And then, as if one humanitarian crisis was not enough, it was also during the spread of the virus when typhoons wreaked havoc on the country. ![]() Last year, we were subjected to a major crisis with the spread of COVID-19. From natural calamities to social and political turbulence, the Philippines consistently ranks among the riskiest countries in the world. To that point rather than clogging up inboxes with another “business as almost normal” mailout, we thought it’d be more useful to give some pointers on the best way to film yourself with your phone, iPad or any other device. Our country is no stranger to crisis. For that reason my hope is that we and the many other brilliant companies in our space, will weather these months in a sea of user-generated content. What’s true of us as individuals – a need to check in with each other more – is just as true of our biggest clients. What’s interesting is seeing how companies are now talking to and with their people. Video assets in whatever resolution are the life blood of Quite Frankly and as long as we’re not talking terabytes of footage, it’s not unreasonable to distribute them around our network. Cloud services like Adobe Creative Suite can be accessed anywhere and as long as the hardware is up to it, there’s no reason why editors can’t continue to create from the comfort, or confines of their home! Thank the gods of production for fibre broadband, where after years of playing catch up, most of us enjoy reasonable speeds and can up and download without too much delay.
